Character Sheet for New Players / Kid Players

Image
This sheet is great for a simple game where you've already decided to drop skills and feats out of the game (certainly doable in 5e). There is a small corner with a few helpful hints, but the white text on light purple background might be hard to read when printed. I was recently asked by a friend if I knew of any versions of the Character Sheet for D&D 5e geared toward kids. Seems he's teaching his children the game, and I applaud him for creating the next generation of D&D gamers. I've also been thinking of starting to teach my son, and maybe a few other kids the game, so I began looking around for alternate versions of the classic 5e Character Sheet that could be used with new players or kid players. I found a few that all seem to have some merit, so let me present my findings and you can decide for yourself. Some small, simplified sheets (not just for kids): The first is this nice simple sheet . The sheet has some color coding. It's a great she...

Getting the Band Together - Recruiting for Your D&D Game

Image
Recently, I've been having an issue running my weekly or even biweekly Dungeons and Dragons game. With five players, it's been difficult scheduling everyone for a convenient time. And even then, work or life was often rearing its head leaving us short at the game table. My general rule of thumb is that if I can get at least three players, then I'll run the others as NPCs for a given session, but even getting just three was problematic. Then one of my most consistent players had to drop out of the group, leaving us with 4 players and myself. It was definitely time to turn on the recruiting drive. There are a number of different things you can try. I'll list out what I did and what seemed to be the most successful for me. One of the things I did NOT do, was post a sign up at my local game store. It's 2013 folks, and since I do most of the session scheduling via email, I wanted someone at least tech-comfortable, if not tech-savvy. Other folks my have better re...

Where, oh Where?

One of the few things I miss about the recent D&D groups I've been in or pulled together versus the first ones I started with, is the lack of female players. When I first started playing, I was lucky enough to be in groups that had such a great range of players, from experienced and new players, young and old, and male and female players. And while some of the female players were the typical "another player's girlfriend", just as many were players in their own right who left their boyfriends/husbands at home once a week to roll dice with the rest of us. Regardless of their motivation, I always found the female players brought a different perspective to the table, just like new players brought a unique outlook with them as well. Now that I'm pulling together my own group, I'm looking for players from a couple of online sites ( EN World , Pen & Paper Games , and a few lesser known places on the Internet), but I haven't heard from any female players.....

GS: The Day After... (Part 1)

It was actually the evening of the Swagfest when the party put their plan in motion... Even though I'm the DM, I have to admit, I'm not sure what exactly they were trying to accomplish. They didn't actually try to break the assassin out of jail, but instead tried to distract the guard while Theo sneaked upstairs to steal her confiscated stuff. Theo got caught in the building on his first attempt, but was successful on the second. Meanwhile, Hunter was talking to Jesswin (the assassin) and mentioned where he was staying at (in front of the guard on duty). The next day, the guard showed up and not only found Hunter and Theo in the same inn, but also found Arti wearing Jesswin's cloak and gloves... needless to say, all three were rounded up and taken to jail. The party tried telling the guards some story about buying stolen goods, but the tail was a little too unbelievable (given their proximity to the stolen items only the night before when they were in guard custody), an...
